For the first weeks it is only the Frank family, and then the Van Pels come. Then later Fritz Pfeffer comes. The secret Annex is protected by a movable bookcase. Below is an office where Miep Gies works, the woman who agreed to hide the Frank family. To the left of the staircase is Mr. Frank, Mrs. Frank and Margot's room. Originally Margot and Anne shared a room, but then Fritz Pfeffer came so Anne had to share with Fritz Pfeffer. In this room (and the other rooms) are furniture that they snuck into the Annex from their house. In this room Margot studies Latin and other courses (Anne and Margot still have to do work while in hiding) and Otto Frank reads his favorite author Dickens.
In the room to the right is the bathroom. Here everyone gets a limited amount of time to clean up. Anne talks about how Fritz Pfeffer always hogs the bathroom. During Anne's time in the bathroom, she has a beauty routine. She desperately wants to be beautiful.
To the room next door is Anne and Fritz Pfeffer's room. Here Anne writes in her diary. Her diary is written in Dutch even though she is German (this is because Anne had gotten her education in Dutch). She fills up several exercise books and loose sheets of paper. She sticks up pictures of royalty (Queen Elizabeth II) and famous celebrities of the time. She spends her time learning about mythology, doing family trees of royals, and reading biographies. However, she hates sharing her room with Fritz Pfeffer. She says he makes strange noises well he sleeps like a fish gasping for air. They also argue over the desk. Anne wants to write in her diary but he says he needs to do his work.
Up the stairs is the Mr. Van Pels and Mrs. Van Pels room/ kitchen/ dinning and living room. Here is where they eat and stay quiet while everyone downstairs is working. They must stay quiet as to not be found. In the beginning the food was good because Miep would buy the food, but as the war went on the food got worse and worse. Things like meat weren't given and they sometimes had to eat the same food weeks after weeks. They are given food such as spinach and beans. In 1944 it gets even worse because they run out of coupons and their grocer is caught. They are given things such as mashed potatoes with kale. Food becomes scarce and Anne predicts hunger. The same is with the clothes because everyone is growing out of the things they had brought. They also keep a radio here in which they listen to broadcast about the war. This is where one evening Anne hears about writings being published after the war and she begins to rewrite her entries to become a book one day.
Under Mr. Van Pels and Mrs. Van Pels room/ kitchen/ dinning and living room is Peter's room. Peter is their son. His room is only a landing on the way to the attic. Peter is shy and keeps in his room along with his cat. Anne first thinks Peter won't be a good companion, but then Anne and Peter get to know each other better. They fall in love and kiss in the attic. Anne and Peter spend a lot of time together in the attic, which results in teasing from the other residents. Eventually Otto does not want Anne spending anymore time with Peter in the attic, but Anne writes a mean letter back saying she is a grown up now. In the end they agree she will not spend as much time, but will still go up there.
On August 4th, 1944 at 10:00 AM-10:30 AM they were caught by the gestapo. No one knows who betrayed them. Anne's last diary entry was on August 1st, 1944.
