Otto Frank was the only one to survive, having been in Auschwitz. When he returns, he goes back to Miep Gies. Miep Gies had been keeping the diary since their arrest in 1944, hoping Anne would return. When they finally learned Anne had not survived, Otto decided to fulfill his daughters wishes and publish the diary. Of course, the diary could not be published as it was. Anne had written about her menstruation and things that simply weren't appropriate during that time so Otto did heavy editing. He also excluded pages that were little interest to the reader or about his marriage with his wife Edith (Otto later re-married to Elfriede Geiringer, who had also survived Auschwitz. Eva Schloss, Elfriede's daughter, is now Anne's half sister). The diary you read now is based on several versions, as Anne went through exerciser books and loose pieces of papers. If you want to read the pages Otto had cut out about his marriage with wife Edith, read the Definitive version of Anne Frank. It also includes things Otto had left out.
On June 25th, 1947 the diary is first published in Dutch as Het Achterhuis, meaning the back house. The diary is so successful that it is published in English in 1952. This then leads to an Anne Frank movie that comes out in March 18th, 1959. There are many theater productions and several movies, but some of the popular ones are Anne Frank: The Whole Story (2001) and Anne Frank (2009). There is even an anime called Anne No Nikki and a whole album of songs inspired by Anne Frank's life and death. The album is called In An Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. There are also statues of Anne Frank in Amsterdam.
On May 3rd, 1957 Otto Frank and his friend helped establish the Anne Frank Foundation to restore the hiding place for the public. The museum was opened on May 3rd, 1960 and is still open. The museum is very popular and even has the original diary. Sadly, Otto Frank died on August 19th, 1980 at the age of 91 because of lung cancer. The diary has been published in a lot of different languages. However, the diary has also been banned from many schools because of the complains of inappropriate context.
